Following their starkly personal and memorable performance of the monumental Winterreise at the Baltimore War Memorial last season, Daryl Yoder and Jung-Yoon Lee return with Schubert’s final great song cycle, Schwanengesang.
Composed in the last months of his short life, it contains both moments of characteristic Schubertian sweetness as well as startling and powerful songs that push the boundaries of melody and harmony beyond anything he had written before. It is both a stunning accomplishment and a tantalizing glimpse into the musical worlds Schubert might have explored in a longer lifetime. The program pairs this work with Gustav Mahler’s exquisite Rückert-Lieder.
